This class is ultimately about learning two skills that are crucial for computer scientists: how to think about algorithms and how to talk about algorithms. Along the way, you'll pick up a bunch of algorithmic facts—mergesort runs in O(n log n) time; the amortized time to search in a splay tree is O(log n); greedy algorithms usually don't produce optimal solutions; the traveling salesman problem is NP-hard—but these aren't the point of the course. You can always look up mere facts in a textbook or on the web, provided you have enough intuition and experience to know what to look for. That's why we let you bring cheat sheets to the exams; we don't want you wasting your study time trying to memorize all the facts you've seen. You'll also practice a lot of algorithm design and analysis skills—finding useful (counter)examples, developing induction proofs, solving recurrences, using big-Oh notation, using probability, giving problems crisp mathematical descriptions, and so on. These skills are very useful, but they aren't really the point of the course either. At this point in your educational career, you should be able to pick up those skills on your own, once you know what you're trying to do.

Candidates have the option of gaining the certification by passing two tests (INTRO and ICND), or one single test (CCNA); the two-test option has the advantage of allowing the candidate to focus on certain subjects.

The certification is valid for three years; at that time a CCNA holder must either

* re-take the CCNA or ICND exam, or
* take and pass an exam for one of the Professional (e.g., CCNP) or Specialist level certifications (excluding the sales specialist exams), or pass the CCIE written exam.

These exams are known by their corresponding numbers. When the curriculum of the exam changes the exam number also changes. The current exam number for CCNA is 640-801. For INTRO and ICND it is 640-811 and 640-821 respectively.

The CCNP is considered proof of having the ability to work with medium-sized networks (between 100 and 500 end devices) and with technology such as QoS, broadband, VPNs, and security-minded features. To acquire a CCNP, one must pass four tests, and either re-certify or upgrade to a CCIE every three years. (The CCNA is a prerequisite for CCNP, but CCIE does not have any prerequisites: see below.) What is HACK ?
The Jargon File contains a bunch of definitions of the term ‘hacker’, most having to do with technical adeptness and a delight in solving problems and overcoming limits. If you want to know how to become a hacker, though, only two are really relevant.

There is a community, a shared culture, of expert programmers and networking wizards that traces its history back through decades to the first time-sharing minicomputers and the earliest ARPAnet experiments. The members of this culture originated the term ‘hacker’. Hackers built the Internet. Hackers made the Unix operating system what it is today. Hackers run Usenet. Hackers make the World Wide Web work. If you are part of this culture, if you have contributed to it and other people in it know who you are and call you a hacker, you're a hacker.

The hacker mind-set is not confined to this software-hacker culture. There are people who apply the hacker attitude to other things, like electronics or music — actually, you can find it at the highest levels of any science or art. Software hackers recognize these kindred spirits elsewhere and may call them ‘hackers’ too — and some claim that the hacker nature is really independent of the particular medium the hacker works in.
